Visit Totnes and Dartington
The ancient Devon town of Totnes, and the nearby village and country estate at Dartington, make a great day out when you stay with us at the Two Bridges Hotel.
For starters, you’ll enjoy one of the most scenic drives on the whole of Dartmoor, from the Two Bridges Hotel, through the pretty riverside picnic spot at Dartmeet, across the high moors through Poundsgate, and eventually down the Dart valley to Buckfast and onwards to Dartington and Totnes.
We suggest that you make Dartington your first stop, parking your car at the Dartington Hall Estate (a modest parking charge applies). Take a stroll around the beautiful gardens which are at the centre of the estate, or for something more strenuous, take a circular walk around the estate, along the banks of the River Dart, and past the pretty Devon village of Staverton with its beautifully preserved railway station (on the South Devon Railway – a heritage line which offers steam-train trips for most of the year).
Adjacent to the Dartington Hall estate, you’ll find “The Shops at Dartington” – a collection of highly individual small shops focusing on local art, crafts, food and tasteful gifts.
If you still have time, the riverside town of Totnes is a short drive away.
Totnes is thriving and historic Devon market town, well known for its bohemian lifestyle. There is a single main street (with its landmark Elizabethan arch) which climbs up from the riverside, where, true to the town’s bohemian reputation, you’ll find plenty of outlets for wholefoods, arts and crafts. You’ll also find some great antique shops, and an amazing array of eateries offering delicious lunchtime treats. Totnes Castle, preserved by English Heritage, and the medieval church of St Mary, are also well worth a visit.
